During her interview on The Real, Hathaway explained why that photo of her wearing her father's hat was so frowned upon.
"...Clearly I'm not in a fraternity," explained Hathaway of the photo posted to Instagram of her wearing an Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. hat, that was given to her mother in memory of her father.

Hathaway caused so much of a commotion within the fraternity for wearing a hat that only her father, as a member, had rights to wear. One comment from an Alpha fraternity member put it all in perspective for Hathaway and non-members when he wrote,
"I'm sorry Lalah, but this isn't yours to choose to wear.
Bro. Hathaway belonged to a fraternity, something we all took oaths to uphold, and regardless of anyone's connection to it, if you're not a member, you don't have a right to the privileges."
