Cuba Gooding Jr. In American Crime Story |
During an interview with Larry King, Gooding says it took him a month to get back to a "right state of mind" after playing the disgraced former NFL star.
The 48-year-old actor compared the darkness he felt to what Heath Ledger said he experienced after playing the Joker in The Dark Knight.
"I remember Heath Ledger said after he played the Joker character that it was just a darkness he couldn’t shake and I always thought that was kind of BS.

OJ Simpson During Trial |
"I felt such extreme guilt because I remember celebrating the ‘not guilty’ verdict because I didn’t care if he did it or not. I didn’t want another black man to be railroaded, okay? So here I was in that moment realizing I never grieved for those families.
I could celebrate that, but I can’t take into consideration the Goldman family, the Brown’s and it just hit me."
Gooding said he distinctly remembers having a nervous breakdown in his trailer before shooting a scene where O.J. attends Nicole Brown's funeral and kisses her corpse.
"It f**ks with your mind a little bit," he said.
“American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson” is based on the true story of former football star O.J. Simpson’s trial.
Accused of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown-Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman, O.J. Simpson was later acquitted in the widely publicized case.
The series airs every Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
