The legendary boxing champion slammed the Republican presidential candidate’s call for Muslims to be banned from the United States.
“We as Muslims have to stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda,” Ali said in a statement first released to Reports.
True Muslims know or should know that it goes against our religion to try and force Islam on anybody.”
While the statement doesn’t name Trump, it’s an obvious broadside against the billionaire: It is titled “Presidential Candidates Proposing to Ban Muslim Immigration to the United States,” a plan Trump shared on Monday.
Ali, arguably the most famous Muslim in the world, called for Muslims to “stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda.”
“True Muslims know that the ruthless violence of so called Islamic Jihadists goes against the very tenets of our religion,” Ali said in a statement.
“I believe that our political leaders should use their position to bring understanding about the religion of Islam and clarify that these misguided murderers have perverted people’s views on what Islam really is.”
Though the statement does not name Trump specifically, it is directed at “presidential candidates proposing to ban Muslim immigration to the United States.”
