New Nina Simone biopic Will Hit Theaters December 2015

BHR Hollywood Reports..........Nina, the long-delayed Nina Simone biopic starring Zoe Saldana in the title role, will hit theaters in December, with RLJ Entertainment acquiring North American rights to the project.

The film, which follows Simone’s musical career and role as a civil rights activist, was written and directed by Cynthia Mort. Plagued by cast issues (Mary J. Blige had once been attached to the project;

 Zaldana received backlash due to her lack of resemblance to Simone and singing experience) and problems with the movie’s UK producer, its release has been in limbo
since 2010.

 In fact, Simone’s own daughter, Lisa Kelly, chose to support What Happened, Miss Simone? instead of Mort’s forthcoming biopic.


The film chronicles Simone's struggles to balance social activism with her acclaimed music career, which included 15 Grammy nominations and legendary songs like
"Feeling Good" and "My Baby Just Cares For Me."

 Nina also touches on the isolation Simone felt living alone in France, where she met her assistant Clifton Henderson (David Oyelowo).

In addition to Zaldana, David Oyelowo (Selma) and Mike Epps (Next Friday) are set appear in Nina.
