Media reported that Dwyer was being “questioned about alleged fight with [his] wife from a while ago,” after being “escorted out to [Phoenix] Police after Wednesday[‘s] practice.”

Phoenix police later confirmed that Dwyer had indeed been arrested on aggravated assault charges.

According to, the charges are based upon two incidents that happed in July and “involved a 27-year-old woman and an 18-month-old boy,” whom police identified as Dwyer and the woman’s child. also reports that police believe Dwyer “took a shoe and threw it toward the 18-month-old child he shares with the woman,” during the second incident, while Dwyer “threatened to harm himself…in an attempt to keep the woman from contacting police.”

Dwyer, 25, is in his first year with the Cardinals after spending the previous four seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been under fire
The news came just hours after Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy and Minnesota Viking running back Adrian Peterson were placed on the NFL’s “exempt list.” Players with the designation receive full pay while being away from their team; they can only be placed on this list at the discretion of the Commissioner of the NFL.

Hardy was convicted in July after he was alleged to have thrown his former girlfriend into the bathtub, onto a sofa covered with guns, then threatened to kill her.

Peterson is currently facing charges of child abuse in Texas after he was accused of beating his 4-year-old son in May. It was reported on Monday that Peterson was also investigated for abusing a different son in 2013.

All of this came less than two weeks after former Ravens running back Ray Rice was suspended indefinitely by the NFL and released by the team after a graphic video surfaced showing Rice assaulting his then-fiancée in February in the elevator of an Atlantic City casino.

Rice’s indefinite suspension was officially appealed by the NFL Players Association on Tuesday
