You see, according to Robin, relatives of the late Marvin Gaye have made claims that the popular summer jam is a derivative of Marvin’s original work, “Got to Give it Up.”
In an effort to protect themselves from being dragged into an ugly copyright infringement lawsuit, Robin Thicke, Clifford “T.I.” Harris and Pharrell Williams filed a suit against the family yesterday.
Court documents filed on behalf of Robin, T.I. and Pharrell read: “Plaintiffs, who have the utmost respect for and admiration of Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic and their musical legacies, reluctantly file this action in the face of multiple adverse claims from alleged successors in interest to those artists.

“But there are no similarities between plaintiffs’ composition and those the claimants allege they own, other than commonplace musical elements.” “Plaintiffs created a hit and did it without copying anyone else’s composition.”
The suit filed on behalf of Thicke, Harris and Williams reveals that both Bridgeport and Gaye’s family have threatened to take legal action in the event that the plaintiffs refuse to pay a monetary settlement.
Now I’m no musical genius, but after going back and listening to Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give it Up,” I have to say that it does sound awfully similar to “Blurred Lines.” “S*xy Ways,” however, is a tough call.
